Flight experiments conducted at the Sendai airport (under a joint research project with National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL), National Space Development Agency (NASDA), and Electronic Navigation Research Institute (ENRI) in partial co-operation with Toshiba and NEC Corporations) were utilized to evaluate and establish new navigation sensor technologies which will play a key role in the unmanned spaceplane HOPE (H-2 Orbiting Plane) approach/landing (A/L) navigation system design. The Dornier-228-200 (Do-228), an experimental research aircraft of NAL, is used for the flight experiments. The navigation sensors tested include the Microwave Landing System (MLS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Inertial Navigation System (INS), and radio altimeter. The Differential GPS (DGPS) was also tested in both stand-alone and hybrid modes. The Do-228 is tracked during flight by a laser tracker, with subsequent data being used to provide a reference profile of the aircraft. Navigation accuracy is evaluated in the post-flight performance analysis as the difference between reference profile and navigation output from each navigation sensor or hybrid system. This comparison is made in the Runway Coordinate System (RCS), a reference navigation coordinate system which corresponds to the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). The RCS was constructed using GPS interferometric positioning. In this report, emphasis is placed on describing the tested navigation sensors, data acquisition systems, ground guidance facilities, flight patterns, and analysis strategies. Some preliminary analysis results are also presented which evaluate the stand-alone performance of each navigation sensor as well as a hybrid GPS-INS system.
