The study sought to explore the transportation needs of the fully developed town of Reston expected by the 1980s to reach a population of around 70,000 people and to develop a transportation system which allows for a choice by the trip maker among driving an automobile, walking or cycling, and riding a public transit system designed to serve internal needs. It was found that walking had little alternate effect on vehicle transportation. At best bus transportation is predicted to amount to 5% of all person trips including the carriage of school children. While the highway plan for Reston is with few exceptions expected to be adequate, the bus system to meet costs most probably will find it necessary to carry school children and be subsidized by Fairfax County. Reston is encouraged to seek a demonstration project to test new operating techniques which might help reduce operating expenses of the transit system. (Author)
