The sub-study 'Definition of the environmental problems of community structures and traffic system' studied the negative environmental impacts of traffic, i.e. disadvantages likely to cause environmental problems. Exhaust and noise emissions and energy consumption were treated as notable environmental problems of community structures and traffic systems. Also other significant impacts such as traffic safety, land use and costs were taken into account in the definition of environmental problems. The sub-study also gathered information about other ongoing studies on the environmental impacts of traffic and community structures that should be considered when planning the research program.
