The Viking Program is part of an overall NASA program designed to explore the planet Mars with automated spacecraft. In 1975, two Viking spacecraft, each consisting of a Lander Capsule and Orbiter, will be launched from the Air Force Eastern Test Range by Titan/Centaur launch vehicles to conduct orbital, upper atmospheric, and surface investigations of Mars. The potential for adverse environmental impact is small; such impacts as are foreseen will be localized, short in duration, controllable, and environmentally acceptable. Alternates to the present spacecraft design/configuration were considered during the early design phases but were not better in terms of environmental impact than the present one with the one possible exception of using solar cells for generating electrical power for the Lander as opposed to the use of Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTG).
