Over half of Brazilian general cargo is distributed by trucks, followed by rail and waterways, like the United States. During the 2nd quarter of 2009, transportation costs for soybeans from Brazil to Hamburg declined 32-41 percent from the same period last year due to a 51 percent drop in ocean rates. Rates to Shanghai also declined, but not as much as Hamburg's. Ocean rates to Europe dropped because of sluggish world trade volumes, declining ship utilization ratios, cuts in bunker fuel surcharges as a result of the drop in oil prices, and carriers increasingly desperate efforts to gain or hold market share.
