This report briefly describes the nondestructive inspection (NDI) methods and equipment that are available for use by both the Air Force and airline maintenance personnel whenever they are required to perform an aircraft structural inspection. It points out the specific inspection methods that could be adapted for use on an aircraft constructed of aluminum or titanium. It also briefly describes some of the new inspection methods and equipment now under development within the Boeing Company. The data and other information contained herein were obtained primarily from three sources: through research of pertinent literature, from field trips to McChord Air Force Base and discussions with military maintenance personnel, and from visits to the various testing laboratories within the Company and discussions with engineering personnel. The objective of this study is to identify and/or develop nondestructive inspection features that can be converted to design recommendations in future aircraft. Incorporation of NDI capability in the airframe can significantly reduce the maintenance effort and time involved in determining aircraft structural integrity and thereby improve system availability and direct maintenance costs.
