The report describes a research study involving computerized evaluation of pavement texture. The computerized approach allowed a large data base covering a wide range of pavement textures to be evaluated from which meaningful conclusions concerning pavement texture, pavement friction, and other performance factors could be drawn. The central objective of the evaluation was to identify relationships between pavement texture characteristics and pavement friction, and to identify instrumentation systems that have the capability of measuring these texture parameters at highway speeds. The contents includes: Pavement texture instrumentation--(Light depolarization instrument, Stereophotographic system, AUTECH laser profiling system, Mechanical stylus instruments, Sand patch and pavement friction equipments); Test program--(Description of test site and Test schedule, Test program activities); Preliminary analysis of experimental data--(Pavement frictional data, Stereophotographic results, Depolarization results, Sand patch results, Profile texture data); Correlation studies; and Conclusions and recommendations.
