Four contributions concerning flutter prevention for aircraft are presented. The first author discusses three major areas of flutter testing: flutter model design, flight flutter testing, and ground vibration testing. For flutter prevention, seven essential flutter cases are selected for discussion in which cause and cure for each case are clearly displayed. In the second section, the authors discuss six cases of flutter of full scale aircraft or wind tunnel models, as to flutter type, cause and correction. Also included are descriptions of several control surface/tab systems and how they function. Mass and aerodynamic balance types and design rules are also discussed. In the third section, the author discusses the concurrent development of flutter analysis, numerical modeling techniques, ground vibration testing and in-flight flutter testing at three companies. Airplanes of 18 distinct types serve as illustrative examples, covering subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic regimes. In the fourth section, the author discusses two cases of aeroservoelastic instability, in which configurations that were flutter stable without their flight control systems become unstable at certain regimes with the control systems engaged.
