The Comstar spacecraft are high-capacity satellites for use by American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) as part of AT&T's nationwide communications network. Under an agreement with COMSAT General, AT&T will lease the entire capacity of the Comsat spacecraft. AT&T is building its own Earth station network, and plans to integrate satellite communications with its terrestrial facilities to enhance its domestic U.S. Services. Each of the Comstar satellites will have a capacity for more than 14,000 two-way high quality voice circuits. When stationed in geostationary orbit at 22,300 miles altitude, they will be capable of providing reliable communications to the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
