The Interstate 70 bypass of Boonville, Mo. was completed in October 1960, diverting most of the through traffic which had formerly passed through Boonville on U.S. Route 40. Analysis of the economic impact on the area, including the results of three new interchanges on I-70, showed that (a) total retail sales increased 13 percent from 1959 to 1963, (b) estimated gross retail sales of gasoline service stations decreased 27 percent from 1958 to 1963, interchange areas excluded, and increased 8 percent, interchanges included, (c) motel and hotel receipts increased 16 percent from the previous high in 1959 to 1963, including interchange areas, (d) restaurant, tavern, and liquor store sales in 1963 were 2 percent less than the 1959 peak, (e) automotive retail sales in 1963 exceeded the 1959 peak by 15 percent, and, (f) general merchandise retail sales increased about 23 percent from 1958 to 1963.
