The coordination of the announcement of opportunity, the mission operation plan, and the possible Dutch contribution to the calibration and validation of ERS-1 are discussed. The study of the Dutch proposals to the announcement of opportunity for ERS-1 shows that the coordination of the needs for ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar images by ESA is desired. With respect to the mission operation plan it is important for the Netherlands that the operational wind and wave data are available within 1 to 2 hr, and that sufficient radar images of the Dutch coast are available. The development of a C-band SAR, as a contribution to the ERS-1 validation program, is discussed.
