The report is concerned with the development of a digital freeway simulation model as a tool to assess the effect of the lane placement of truck traffic on multi-lane freeway traffic flow characteristics. The model developed is basically Northwestern University's limited purpose Simulation Model of 'Lane Changing on a Multi-Lane Highway' with certain logic additions from general purposed models developed by Midwest Research Institute and Texas Transportation Institute. No exit or entrance ramp capability is available in the models's present form. Model performance was evaluated by comparing observed field survey data with simulated traffic flow characteristics. The author feels that simulation experience with the model's vehicle generation, vehicle placement, and mainlane car-following and lane-changing logic indicate good representation of actual field conditions. The model, in its present form, would not support any substantive conclusions as to the effect of trucks on freeway traffic flow.
