This is the Annual Report for 1998 of the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission of the United States. The Foreign Claims Settlement Commission of the United States is an independent quasi-judicial federal agency organized administratively as a component of the U.S. Department of Justice. The Commission's primary mission is to determine the validity and valuation of claims of United States nationals for loss of property in foreign countries, as authorized by Congress or following government-to-government claims settlement agreements. These losses have occurred either as a result of nationalization of property by foreign governments or from damage to and loss of property as a result of military operations during World War II. The Commission also has adjudicated claims of United States military personnel and civilians captured or interned during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. In addition, the Commission devoted the first part of 1998 to completion of its Holocaust Survivors Claims Program, addressing claims by U.S. citizens persecuted by the Nazis during World War II.
