Rates of deterioration varied markedly from one component to another, and from one system to another. The most serious faults which were present in consistently high percentages are front-end geometry errors. This is especially true of new cars. Headlamps were ill-aimed in well over half the cars examined; only in 1969 cars was the percentage less than 50%, and there was a steady deterioration with age to 67% for the 1963 models tested. This was the fault occurring most commonly. There were suspension defects in a large percentage even of brand new cars and here, too, the proportion increased with age. The state of engine tune displayed in the cars with 500 miles or more registered was generally poor. Only in the 23 1969 cars examined was the proportion of cars with engine tune defects less than 30%, and in all earlier years, it was over 40%, rising to a high of 65% in 1963 models. (Author)
