The 2-D version of the MADYMO simulation program was selected for conducting pedestrian accident reconstructions. The model was evaluated with two adult cadaver tests and one child dummy test. Head and chest velocities occurring at time of impact with vehicle surfaces were predicted with good accuracy. Fifteen pedestrian accidents, consisting of ten adult and five child cases, were reconstructed. Impact kinematics appeared to be reasonable and generally agreed with the descriptions recorded in the accident reports. A reasonable trend of increasing head injury with increasing head impact velocity was observed. It was concluded that the 2-D MADYMO computer model is capable of estimating head and chest impact velocities for both adult and child pedestrians reasonably accurately.
