Experimentation from Spacelab will represent a completely new approach to space observations. Similarities between the experiment operations foreseen for Spacelab and those practiced in the course of airborne observations from a NASA-operated CV 990, have led to a proposed joint ESA and NASA simulation mission. This mission (ASSESS) executed during the period June 2-17, 1975, permits the performance of valuable science in the form of a multidiscipline payload consisting of 6 experiments (3 from Europe, 3 from U.S.) and, at the same time, allows simulation of certain Spacelab conditions. The results of the latter provide valuable information affecting experiment design, experiment operations, mission management and Spacelab subsystem design. (Author)
