In October, 1973, the Illinois General Assembly lowered the legal drinking age for beer and wine from 21 to 19. Now, three years later, the effects of the new legislation were assessed. When comparing known drivers in fatal accidents in Illinois for the period 1971-1972 (before the legal drinking age reduction) to the period 1974-1975 (after the age reduction), the rate of teen-age and young drivers' (15-24) involvement can be seen to have risen rapidly. But the greatest area of relative increase has been in the 19-20-year-old category. Fatal accident involvement of known drivers for ages 25 and above have all decreased since the 1971-1972 period. This reduction is largely due to reduced speeds and travel.
