Establishment of the Mirror Lake area of the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, is proposed for operation of recreational off-road vehicles. The area of concern is approximately 180 acres of an unimproved dry lake desert playa. The lake surface has been used by all types of recreational vehicles for the past 29 years. Wildlife populations and native vegetation have been irreversibly altered over the 29-year period. Surface of the playa has been modified by vehicular use also during this period. Noise developed by recreational off-road vehicles is a source of irritation to certain residents.
