The channel economics for a direct TV satellite in the 14 GHz range with 4 or 5 channels were investigated for post-Apollo launch facilities, such as space shuttle and tug. It is shown that shuttle phase kickstage and shuttle/tug improve the channel economy by a factor of 2 compared to conventional launch vehicles because their payload capability allows for increased built-in redundancy and lifetime of application satellites. Shuttle system facilitates design and fabricate of only those subsystems which have very low impact on system cost. Retrieval missions, combined with repair on the ground, do not increase the channel economy of a TV satellite. A multi-nations service network results in further cost reduction per channel and year. Any possible improvement of the satellite design life results in lower channel cost per year due to the high unit production cost of this type of communication satellite.
