The benthos biomass in central and southern Caspian is unevenly distributed. Eastern shore and the area of the Apsheron peninsula in central Caspian and western shore in southern Caspian are rich in benthos. The central deep water portion is characterized by a low biomass value, under 1 g/sq m. It is the mollusks which prevail by weight in the benthos of central and southern Caspian making about 90% of the former and over 90% of the latter sector. Gammarids and corophids attain an appreciable development in central Caspia, while the role played by them in the benthos of southern Caspian is very small. Nereis diversicolor introduced to both central and southern Caspian achieved a considerable development (0.6-0.8g/sq m). High indices of total biomass of the eastern shore of central Caspian (200 g/sq m) are due mainly to the vigorous development of Mytilaster lineatus and Dreissena distincta. Despite some increase of the total biomass both in central and southern Caspian in 1956, when compared to that in 1933-1939, the food value of the marine benthos increased due to the biomass increase of Mytilaster lineatus and to the appearance of Nereis diversicolor.
