The Storable Tubular Extendible Member (STEM) technique for expanding metallic structures has obvious merit as a general purpose device for use in Space Maintenance as well as a storage method for long lengths of 'Structural Steel'. It may be used for the extra vehicular manufacture of docking booms, safety devices, tethering structures and large antenna masts and reflector dishes. Development programs have been carried out to develop structures suitable for extra-vehicular manufacture. (Author)
