The Comet Halley Active Monitoring Program (CHAMP) is a middeck payload sponsored by the Solar System Exploration Division of this office. It is expected to be flown three times during the current apparition of Comet Halley. The primary flight of CHAMP will be on STS 51-L in January 1986 when the comet will be most active, and when viewing from the surface of the Earth will be most difficult due to the narrow viewing angle between the comet and the Sun. The first flight of CHAMP will be on STS 61-C in December 1985, and the third is planned for STS 61-E in March 1986. The December and March flights will provide important pre- and post perihelion baseline data which will also assist with the interpretation of the data from the January flight. The summary objective of the CHAMP flights is to obtain wide field visible and ultraviolet data on Comet Halley using handheld equipment. This data is considered supplemental in relation to the extensive and detailed space-based data to be obtained from the flight of the ASTRO mission on STS 61-E, the Spartan-Halley payload on STS 51-L, the UVX payload on STS 61-C, and the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) spacecraft. However, the CHAMP data will be unique in its nature and ability to provide a single context for all of these activities as it makes observations on all three STS flights mentioned.
