The report provides weighted and unweighted one-way frequencies for all the vehicles in UMTRI's file of Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA), 1992. The TIFA dataset provides coverage of all medium and heavy trucks recorded in the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) file. TIFA combines vehicle, accident, and occupant records from FARS with information about the physical configuration and operating authority of the truck from the TIFA survey form. In most cases the TIFA information is produced by telephone interviews with the driver, owner, or some other involved party. For the few cases where an interview was not completed, information was transcribed from police reports collected from the states or from the MCS 50-T report submitted by interstate carriers of goods to the Office of Motor Carriers (OMC) in the Federal Highway Administration. Some sampling was done in selecting the cases for the file. Cases where there was a MCS 50-T report available were taken with certainty. Among the remaining cases, half were selected where the FARS body type and vehicle trailering variables indicated the vehicle was a straight truck or a tractor with one trailer. All other FARS cases were included.
