A Universal Platform Module, nominally 44 in. x 108 in., plus add-on longitudinal and lateral peripherial members, was designed so that it may be assembled into a logistics or an air-drop platform. The cost and weight analysis of this universal concept indicated no advantages compared to the currently used 463L and Army modular platform. The study was then placed on a more objective analysis of the logistics and air-drop platform requirements. When considering total platform costs (i.e. initial cost, reuseability, maintenance, inventory, and transportation costs) it became more apparent that the logistics and air-drop platform have non-compromising requirements. Design emphasis was then directed towards improved logistics and improved air-drop platforms. The cargo restraint, developed to correct the field deficiencies of the currently used 463L cargo nets, incorporates a unique webbing pattern to minimize the loading requirements on the platform proper.
