The report describes the results of an analytical study to determine the feasibility of expanding the flight envelope of the XH-51A compound helicopter to include a 300-knot speed objective through substantially slowed-rotor operation in high-speed flight, and to provide data to support preliminary design of such an aircraft. The phenomena associated with the speed limits observed in prior flight programs are identified and analyzed, and methods for their elimination are presented to show that the flight envelope may be expanded. Also, the effects of various rotor system design parameters on both high speed, at a range of tip speeds, and hover operating characteristics are considered to identify those parameters which are most critical to the design, and to provide a basis for the selection of the best rotor design for the slowed-rotor XH-51A compound helicopter.
