The application of Active Control Technology concepts and in particular the relaxed-static-stability principle applied to future transport aircraft will lead to the introduction of closed-loop primary flight control systems. Adequate handling quality criteria applicable to system design as well as to airworthiness rule-making are required. Flight simulation and in-flight simulation using mathematical models of aircraft with rate-command/attitude-hold primary flight control systems have been performed for the approach and landing flight phase in order to generate data for criteria development. Configurations featuring in addition blended direct-lift control have been evaluated as well.
