The proposed project on the Umpqua Highway (Ore. 38) consists of widening the two-lane highway at selected points to accomodate an extra lane for passing. A loss of land use and accompanying production is inevitable although minimal. Additional adverse effects due to right-of-way acquisition will not be known until direct owner contact is made. Visual impacts will also be minimal. Cut and fill sections are not extensive except in the area of slide reconstruction. In connection with the project, there will be removal of some native trees. Although this will detract from the scenic qualities of the roadway, it will allow for greater visibility of the surrounding terrain which is equally as attractive. There may be an increase in the general noise levels because of increased traffic speed and volume. However, the production of harmful emissions causing air pollution by motor vehicles will be lessened due to the higher and more constant speed.
