This report provides an overview of computer vision. The emphasis is on image understanding and scene analysis, though pertinent aspects of pattern recognition are treated. Image processing for sensor correction, rectification, image enhancement, etc., is not covered. It reviews the basic approach to computer vision systems, the techniques utilized, applications, the current existing systems and state-of-the-art, issues and research requirements, who is doing it and who is funding it, and finally future trends and expectations. The intent is to provide an overall perspective of this vital field with its many participants, that will be useful to engineering and research managers, potential users and others who will be affected by this field as it unfolds.
