One hundred and thirty-eight returned Navy aircrewmen Prisoners of War were administered an extensive questionnaire, covering circumstances leading to the mishap, the ejection, and survival problems before capture. To facilitate comparison with other aviation mishap data, every attempt was made to keep the questionnaire compatible with U.S. Navy and Air Force Medical Officers Reports. Particular attention was given to the effectiveness of escape and protective equipment in preventing injuries and protecting the aircrewmen from the extreme stresses associated with most combat escapes. The Prisoner of War information was combined and compared with 'recovered group data' collected during an earlier phase of this study. This recovered group data was collected from fixed-wing jet aircraft naval aviators who were recovered after ejecting subsequent to combat action over Southeast Asia. The Prisoner of War data were also compared with similar data involving noncombat and training mishaps. From the analyses between the combat and noncombat event, major differences in ejection speed, and degree and types of injuries, are apparent. These differences must be given consideration in the design of future aviation escape and protective equipment, and in the development of future survival and rescue procedures. (Author)
