The report provides a compilation and analysis of data concerning the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) inspection of 92 of the approximately 500 of the nation's scheduled commercial air carriers. These data are representative of FAA's inspections of about 350 air carriers during fiscal year 1984. This review was directed at FAA's responsibility under the Federal Aviation Act, as amended (49 U.S.C. 1421), to monitor and inspect air carrier operations and maintenance to assure compliance with federal safety regulations and FAA-approved air carrier policies and procedures. FAA's avionics, maintenance, and operations inspectors implement this responsibility by conducting inspections of air carrier personnel, aircraft, and maintenance and other facilities. This report presents information on the type, frequency, and results of FAA's fiscal year 1984 air carrier inspections.
