The development and production of electric drive vehicles have been successful in the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, USSR, and, to a lesser degree, in France, Italy, and Sweden. These vehicles are basically designed for commercial or industrial application, and, in general, a typical vehicle of this type has a maximum range of 95 to 200 km and a maximum speed of 27 km/h. Military applications of electric drive vehicles for transportation and combat are significant because they offer a number of advantages over more conventional drive systems.
