A fleet trial on 53 vehicles, namely Ford Taurus FFV (Flexible Fuel Vehicles), has been carried out during the years 1995-1996. The vehicles have been driven at eight different places in Sweden. The aims of the project have been achieved which, among other things, have been to demonstrate that renewable fuels are available and can be used for passenger cars. The average fuel consumption has been 1.14/1/10 km for gasoline and 1.33 1/10 km for E85. The vehicles were used by a wide variety of people. The amount and scope of the data on performance, service and emission measurements have proved to be trustworthy and representative. The level of the emissions is generally speaking low and the difference in emissions between using gasoline and ethanol is generally small. This applies mainly to the regulated emissions but even to the non-regulated ones. Compared to using gasoline the emission of certain pollutants is less when using E85 whereas the emission of others can be somewhat greater. The positive experiences from this project have led to the commencement of stage 2, the object of which is to build up an infrastructure ure for filling stations for ethanol round the whole of Sweden. This will increase the chance of other manufacturers being interested in entering the market.
