Aerial refuelingthe transfer of fuelfrom airborne tankers to combat andairlift forcesis critical to the U.S.militarys ability to effectively operateglobally. The Air Force initiated the KC46 program in 2011 to replace about athird of its aging KC-135 aerialrefueling fleet. Boeing was awarded afixed-price incentive contract todevelop the first four aircraft, which arebeing used for testing. Boeing was alsorequired to deliver the first 18 fullycapable aircraft by August 2017. Theprogram plans to eventually field 179aircraft.
