The project is for the expansion of existing port facilities at the northern end of Cook Inlet at Anchorage, Alaska. The project is the first of a three-phased port development program which will increase berthing space and provide facilities for increased marine commerce, including the potential for an additional container carrier. The existing pier will be extended 370 feet and dredging will be required in the ship channel. The Port of Anchorage will be able to more efficiently handle peak traffic loads and help alleviate queueing of vessels caused by simultaneous arrivals at the port. Improved sea access is expected to provide cost savings in many areas of the city's economy. Adverse effects will include increased turbulence and silt suspension in Cook Inlet during the dredging operations. Existing air quality will be affected as a result of exhaust emissions and dust agitation caused by increased truck traffic in the port area as well as the transfer of certain classes of cargo.
