The Chilean auto parts market looks promising for U.S. suppliers of original and replacement (non-original) auto parts. With the automotive market expected to grow at a conservative average of 4-6% annually for the next decade, the authors project the national automotive market will almost double in ten years. The principal characteristics of the Chilean automotive market is that it is small, extremely open and competitive, deregulated, and price oriented. In 1993, Chile spent approximately US$ 1.1 billion for imported vehicles. The principal suppliers were: Japan (35%), Europe (25%), Korea (18%), Brazil and Mexico (17%). Chilean imports of auto parts increased from US$ 427 million in 1992, to US$ 479 million in 1993.
