The paper addresses aspects of traffic counting and traffic prediction for the South African rural road network. Procedures for a uniform traffic counting system for the republic are discussed and the estimation of future traffic volumes by means of the Rural Traffic Demand Model is explained. The role of traffic counting and prediction in Road Management Systems is also discussed.
