Tendencies in subsonic transport aircraft development, specifically due to progress in aerodynamics, are surveyed. Prospective wing profile designs and improved integration of body dimensions are considered, citing examples from the AIRBUS development program. Possible fuel savings through supercritical wing technology and by optimizing reduction in friction drag are also studied. Advantages to be gained by active control, particularly from adaptive wing technology, are reviewed. As a potential application, an unconventional canard configuration, including transonic propellers, for an aircraft in the AIRBUS class is proposed.
