Maintenance action is proposed consisting of dredging the existing federal channel in the Harlem River, New York, to its authorized project dimensions. The spoil would be deposited in approved dumping grounds in the New York Bight. The project will provide continued accessibility to commercial terminals for deep draft vessels, yielding transportation savings, help alleviate navigation difficulties and oil spills; cause temporary turbidity and slight disruption to marine life in the dredging area. Spoiling in the New York Bight would contribute to the regional problem of ocean disposal.
