One objective of the research is to investigate the situation under which flat and zonal fare structures for buses are being followed in the United States. Survey questionnaires were developed for selected transit properties charging flat and zonal fares. The purpose is to document the method of implementation, collection and enforcement and other relevant details practiced by the bus transit system. Another objective is to survey the available fare-collecting hardware which may be applicable for implementing distance-based or finely graduated fare structures. The concept of automatic fare collection and self service systems is discussed as a means of overcoming the problem of fare collection for distance-based fare structures.
