The report describes a survey, carried out in Glasgow between May and July 1971, which was designed to measure the effect of different methods of linking traffic signals on the journey times of buses through the city's computer-controlled signal network. Three methods of control were assessed, single-cycle TRANSYT and SIGOP, all of which provide libraries of fixed-time signal settings for use at specified times of day. All the systems were based on the average traffic with no special provision for buses. The results showed that buses were not influenced by differences in the signal timings produced by these control schemes although a normal floating car assessment carried out at the same time had shown that traffic generally travels quicker with double-cycle TRANSYT.
