A generic system design concept for unmanned autonomous spacecraft, especially the definition of an on-board management system, is outlined. Autonomy is defined as the capability of the spacecraft to autonomously manage its nominal operations and that of the payload according to the goals and options prescribed by a resident short term operational plan without the need for ad-hoc ground interventions. It implies that if predictable failures occur, they are automatically sorted out in such a way that nominal operations can be continued in full or part without resorting to a noneffective safety mode. Routine and crisis modes are described. Division of tasks between on-board and ground is summarized, and on-board organization is shown. Subsystems are detailed. A development approach is proposed.
