The thermal protection system of Hermes is a very important and complex system, specific to reentry vehicles. Intensive studies have been conducted on the development of materials and structures concepts, mainly on innovative ways to meet the specific requirements of the system. Recent results are presented and the possible reuse and extension of the acquired experience to an aerospace plane is analyzed.
