The report documents an evaluation of vehicle characteristics and their effect on highway design and traffic operation standards. The study involved the identification of all geometric design and traffic operation standards which are a function of a vehicle characteristic; a historical review of the standard's development; the collection and synthesis of vehicle characteristics data including historical, current, and projected trends; a sensitivity analysis to determine how standards are affected by changes in vehicle characteristics specifications; and recommendations for changes in the standard or the vehicle characteristic specification. The study found that for several standards, especially those involving stopping sight distance, the vehicle characteristics were not adequately considered.
