In an effort to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities in the construction industry, the Division of Safety Research (DSR) within NIOSH has supported this proposal of a strategy for future safety research efforts. This report identified specific construction occupation categories exposed to a risk of incurring fatalities or compensable injuries which are higher than the average construction occupation. These high risk occupations were divided by accident type, injury cost factors and frequency of injuries. Those occupations in the construction industry identified as high risk, in decreasing risk order, included laborers, carpenters, heavy equipment operators, roofer/slater, structural metal craftsmen, truck drivers, painters, plumbers, asbestos workers, sheet metal workers, mechanics, drywall installers, welders, cranemen, millwright, boilermakers, linemen, carpet installers, warehousemen, glaziers, and engineering science technicians. Specific types of accidents involved included those in which a worker was struck by another object, overexertion through lifting, those in which a worker strikes a stationary object, hit by a falling object, foreign matter in the eye, falling from an elevation, falling from a ladder, falling from scaffolds, contact with hot objects, and falls from vehicles.
