Elderly people in England encounter several barriers to mobility and practical ways of minimizing such barriers are discussed. Walking is examined in relation to traffic and hazards in the road system, increased distance from essential facilities, and difficult access to public buildings and public transport. The following aspects of driving are considered: cost of motoring, license holding, getting in and out of cars, and parking difficulties. Travel by bus is hindered by reductions in scheduled services, unreliable services, bad publicity and coordination of services, and getting on and off buses. Travel concessions are evaluated, with particular attention given to rising fares, falling bus subsidies, and chaos in the concessionary fare system. Problems associated with access to medical treatment and day care facilities are analyzed. They pertain to reaching general practitioners, the availability of dispensing chemists, access to hospitals (ambulance service, hospital care service, day hospital transport, and public transport), and the provision of transport for day care. The use of voluntary transport resources is addressed. This discussion focuses on various types of voluntary transport using private cars, various types of voluntary minibus service, and voluntary transport coordination. Actions to improve transportation for the elderly are suggested that can be taken through legislation and by governmental departments, local authorities, health authorities and community health councils, bus companies, local pressure groups, and individuals. Information on public bus services in England is appended.
