HOTOL has emerged from studies between BAe and Rolls-Royce as a totally reusable airframe with a hybrid air-breathing propulsion system. It is aimed at placing payloads into low earth orbit for 20% of the cost of the U.S. Space Shuttle. As part of the current Proof-of-Concept Study an assessment is being made of the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle including those in the hypersonic regime. This assessment will also identify areas of high risk and where current methods are deficient. This report details some of the results obtained, the areas so far identified as requiring further work and proposes a five year programme to investigate these areas.
