With the advent in recent years of very large commercial craft (VLCC) and ultra large commercial craft (ULCC), the United States has fallen behind many other maritime countries in providing suitable docking facilities. The shortfall in port facilities capable of handling the deep-draft vessels, coupled with rapidly growing volume of imports and exports of bulk commodities, has resulted in a critical need for improved port facilities in this country. Ship channel design criteria are discussed in terms of minimum width and depth requirements for various size vessels. Improved channel designs are presented for the ports of Port Arthur, Galveston, Freeport, and Corpus Christi.
