The CMOS experiment is the first of two materials processing middeck payloads sponsored under the NAS4/3M Joint Endeavor Agreement (JEA) 84-001 signed September 25, 1984. DMOS will be carried on ST'S 51-A to be launched in early November 1984. 3M has indicated that their intent is to develop long range basic research and a fundamental program in the study of organic and polymer chemistry in space. One of 3M's recognized attributes is an ability to derive new product lines from research directed toward unrelated objectives. 3M believes that a systematic, long term basic space research program will ensure many such discoveries that will be exploited by the company. NASA programs also need a systematic, long term approach for the same reasons as 3M, and it is important to closely coordinate JEA activities with related NASA programs. The resulting interplay is needed to assist the recognition of meaningful JEA activities while helping to retain the integrity and balance of NASA programs. These NASA programs continue to serve as a primary channel of communications with the various scientific communities, and function as drivers for the coherent advancement of scientific and technological objectives, especially in areas that do not appear to have near-term commercial value. The long range goal of 3M in space is to get into manufacturing on the Space Station and they believe that this initial activity is a bridge towards that goal. The enclosed Mission Operation Report contains a brief description of the BIOS experiment. Details regarding the STS 51-A flight are contained in the STS 51-A Prelaunch Flight Operation Report No. M-989-51-A.
