The telecommunications traffic volumes which can be routed on a large satellite in the European region, in the years 1990 to 2000 are forecasted. All the categories of services which are likely to be required were defined including well established services such as telephony as well as future requirements such as videoconferences or high speed facsimile at 2 Mbit/sec. The main European traffic sources were defined and the overall European traffic volume up to the year 2000 was determined. The criteria for subdividing the traffic between the terrestrial and the satellite media were examined. The results are given by country and type of service.
