The results of a study to identify the relative cost differences of U.S. and foreign transport ships of the types which could be used to transport manganese nodules from a deep seabed mining area to shore for processing are presented. The report considers relative costs of acquiring and operating nodule transport ships which are U.S. built and operated, foreign built and U.S. operated, and foreign built and operated. It estimates total costs for a typical nodule transport service in the Pacific Ocean, including consideration of world and U.S. shipbuilding prices, capital cost recovery, nodule handling equipment, cargo transfer facilities, crew and passenger accommodations, wages and benefits, insurance and reserves, maintenance and repair, overhead and administration, fuel and port charges, and typical routes and operating schedules.
